The squash box ladder at they Y is way to engage players, allowing members to meet new players and challenge themselves to climb the ladder into higher levels of play. It is an exciting way to get to know the Y squash community and engage in friendly competition.
Each month players are placed in “boxes” of 5 or 6 players, and they are given 1 month to play against each other. Results are recorded, awarding each player 1 point for every game won. Matches are best 3 out 5 games, so the maximum amount of points that a player can get for a match won is 3. The loser could get 0, 1 or 2 points depending on the final outcome of the game. Players accumulate points throughout the month. It is important to play as many matches as possible, as there are no points awarded for games not played.
The movement of players up and down boxes ensures that players will face different opponents each month. Players will gravitate towards boxes with players of similar skill level, meeting both stronger and weaker players. This is a desirable part of the ladder that makes it interesting and challenging for all.
Players will use the contact information of other players to reach out and schedule games at times suitable for both players.
At the end of each month, the boxes are redrawn based on the prior month’s results, and a new ladder is posted.
