Your Personal Journey

We are here to help you achieve your health and fitness goals whether you're new to the Y, new to exercise or a returning member we haven't seen in a while.

 

New to the Y

Welcome to the Y. There are so many things we can't wait to share with you about the Y. We will introduce you to the 'Y' way and support your health and fitness goals.

Here is how we would like to help:

  • Take you on tour of our building so you know where specific rooms and spaces that are of interest to you
  • Share with you all the programs we offer within our community that you may not know about
  • Sign you up for a Member Connect fitness appointment free of charge. This will be an appointment with one of our certified fitness staff to help design a fitness program that fits your needs
  • Fitness staff will show you how to properly use the fitness equipment
  • Staff will be available on the fitness floor to help with any questions you have as you get started with your new fitness program

New to Exercise

The Fitness department is here to support you with the following if you are new to exercise:
  • Listen to you to better understand your health and fitness goals
  • Help to design a fitness program for you that supports your goals
  • Ensure you know how to use the fitness equipment to safely get started
  • Describe and recommend specific fitness classes that you may be interested in
  • Will answer any questions and offer support as you continue to work towards your goal

Returning to the Y 

Let us tell you about any changes that may have happened while you were away:
  • Learn about any new fitness classes being offered
  • Learn about any new pieces of fitness equipment we have
  • Meet our new fitness instructors and personal trainers
  • Talk with one of our certified fitness instructors so we can better understand your current goals to get you on track and to support you with staying on track

Group Active (MOSSA)

Group Active® gives you all the fitness training you need in one hour. Cardio, strength, balance and flexibility are all components instructed using inspiring music, adjustable dumbbells, weight plates, body weight and simple athletic movements.

Group Blast (MOSSA)

Group Blast is 60 minutes of cardio training that uses The STEP in highly effective, athletic ways. It will get your heart pounding and sweat pouring as you improve your fitness, agility, coordination, and strength with exciting music and group energy. HAVE A BLAST!

Group Centergy (MOSSA)

Group Centergy is a perfect way to improve balance, mobility, flexibility, and strength. It's ideal to be your workout of choice or add it once a week to your current workouts to reinvigorate the mind and body.

Train like an athlete in 30 action-packed minutes. Expert coaching and fun music will guide you through functional and integrated exercises using your body weight, weight plates, a towel, and a platform - all to challenge you like never before.

Group Fight (MOSSA) 

Group Fight™ is a gripping hour that burns a ton of calories and builds total body strength. Tap into the hottest mixed martial arts movements done at a rapid-fire pace to smash your cardio fitness! From the boxing ring to the fighting cage, Group Fight combines cutting-edge moves with thrilling music. This electric experience is addictive! FIGHT FOR IT!

Group Power (MOSSA)

Group Power® is your hour of power. Blast all your muscles with this high rep weight training workout. Using an adjustable barbell, weight plates and body weight, Group Power® combines squats, lunges, presses, and curls in functional integrated exercises. Dynamic music and a group atmosphere will get your heart rate up and make you sweat and push you to a personal best.

Group Ride (MOSSA)

Group Ride is a fantastic way to improve your cardio fitness, burn calories, shape and strengthen your lower body. Since you control the intensity of the workout by adjusting your own bike, it's a great workout for all ages whether you are just starting out or you are an avid cyclist looking to train indoors.

High Intensity Interval Training (H.I.I.T.)

High Intensity Interval Training is a 30 minute class using free weights and functional movement. See and feel results as you challenge your body in this intense class. H.I.I.T is suitable for intermediate to advanced participants. 

Interval Training

This class will take you through challenging cardio and strength intervals. Rowing machines and small equipment such as free weights and stability balls will be utilized during this class. This class is suitable for intermediate to advanced participants. 

Line Dancing

Get active while you learn some fun line dances to popular country songs.

Total Body Challenge

Total Body Challenge is a workout guaranteed to build muscle, burn calories and make you sweat. From resistance training to cardio and core challenges, this class is a full hour of movement. Using a variety of equipment, including your own body weight, you'll get an all-over workout and be challenged every step of the way. 

Zumba

Zumba fuses hypnotic Latin rhythm and easy to follow dance moves to create a dynamic fitness program. Strengthen your lower body and increase your coordination in this motivating, upbeat, cardio class.

Zumba mix

Zumba, but with some extras such as toning with the Zumba shakers!

Cycling

Group Cycling

A cardiovascular workout of varying intensities. Enjoy great music while you simulate riding hills and valleys. You control the intensity of your workout by adjusting your own bike.

Group Ride (MOSSA)

Group Ride is a fantastic way to improve your cardio fitness, burn calories, shape and strengthen your lower body. Since you control the intensity of the workout by adjusting your own bike, it's a great workout for all ages whether you are just starting out or you are an avid cyclist looking to train indoors.

Yoga, Pilates and More

 

Group Centergy (MOSSA)

Group Centergy is a perfect way to improve balance, mobility, flexibility, and strength. It's ideal to be your workout of choice or add it once a week to your current workouts to reinvigorate the mind and body.

Pilates

Perform a series of movements to help engage your body while improving posture and tone. Pilates increases flexibility and gives you more energy as well as flattens your abdominal muscles, increasing circulation and building stronger, longer, and leaner muscles.

Power Yoga Flow

Power Yoga is a fitness-based vinyasa practice. An offshoot of Ashtanga Yoga. It has many of the same qualities and benefits, including building internal heat, increased stamina, strength, and flexibility, as well as stress reduction. The flow is a series of fast paced sequences, synchronized with breath. This vigorous vinyasa style will help to strengthen your core and muscles while the meditation at the end of the practice will relax and transform you. Students are encouraged and challenged to explore the possibilities within their physical bodies.

Restorative Yoga

Restorative Yoga classes are almost exclusively on the floor, using yoga 'props' and focus on complete relaxation, improving range of motion and deep breathing.

Stretch and Mobility

In this program, the focus is on lengthening and stretching your tight muscles, and improving your mobility. This class will help you avoid injuries while actively increasing your flexibility.

Tai Chi

Slow graceful and peaceful movement which is practiced mainly for its health benefits. Slow movements can help deeply relax the body and mind, improve blood circulation, gently tone, strengthen and restore organs and muscles to their natural healthy levels.

Yoga

Find your hidden strength, balance and flexibility with Yoga. With regular practice, you'll soon notice a stronger, more balanced body and you'll leave each class feeling calm and fulfilled.

Yoga stretch

Yoga Stretch offers you 45 minutes of yoga movements that focus on a slow flow, which will lengthen and strengthen all aspects of your body. You will feel stretched and refreshed after this class.

Yoga Gold

In this balanced workout, you will improve strength, balance, and flexibility.The simple basic yoga positions in this program, with the use of a chair, allows anyone to try yoga. 

Yoga for Arthritis 

This biomechanically-based program is demonstrated to reduce pain and improve function and stength in those with osteoarthritis, arthritis, or low mobility. 

Training Options

 

Individual

Our personal training team consists of a diverse group of educated, skilled, and professionally certified trainers. Our one-on-one personal training programs meet a variety of health and wellness goals including weight loss, strength training, flexibility/mobility, sport specific training, and general physical fitness and wellbeing.

One-on-one individual training will include:

  • A knowledgeable trainer who will work with you to achieve your goals
  • Creating S.M.A.R.T goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely)
  • Proper supervision leading to increased exercise safety and efficiency
  • Providing continuous accountability and motivation for continual results and success
  • Individualized fitness programs suited specifically to your fitness level or catered to an injury you may be recovering from
  • Nutritional guidance

Partner

Do you have a friend, family member or co-worker that you would like to try Personal Training with? Why not try Partner Training? You and your partner will benefit from having a personal trainer, but at a shared rate.

Small Group - Friends, Family, Co-workers

Group training is designed for you and a small group of 4-8 friends looking to improve your fitness level and learn new exercises together. Your group will work with our skilled and professional personal trainers to develop a series of custom workouts designed to fit your needs and meet your goals, budget and timeline.

Gym to Game

Gym to Game is a tailored, sport specific workout ideal for small groups of up to 8 competitive or rec-level teammates. This program is ideal for a group looking to compete in one of the many challenging obstacle course events such as Tough Mudder.

Wedding Bells Bootcamp

Bring the wedding parties together to work on looking your very best and having confidence for the big day.

Commit to Get Fit

This is a great opportunity for friends to come together and share their fitness journey in a supportive educational environment. This program is perfect for those who are new to fitness or have been away from the gym for a while and are looking to get back into it.

Stork Fit

Pre or Post Natal boot camps designed for new and expecting parents. This is a great way to connect with new parents.

Specialized Offerings (Small Group Training) 

Obstacle Course Race training - Register here 

Join us for activity specific training for obstacle course racing! You'll be able to build strength, endurance and resilience in a supportive, team-oriented environment.

 

Guelph Y Running Club - Register here 

Learn to run or improve running endurance, strength, mobility in a fun, challenging group environment. Meet other runners and build relationships through this encouraging and inclusive running club. Get race ready!

Duration: 8 Weeks

Date: Tuesday evenings, begins April 3, 2018 

Times: 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Cost: $40.00 for members and non-members

 

Plyometric Training Bootcamp - Register here 

Learn how to do plyometrics including effective warm up and progressive exercises with a certified Personal Trainer

Date: Saturday afternoons, beginning April 21 to May 12, 2018

Times: 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Cost: $50 for members, $75 for non-members

 

'Gym to Game: Golf!' - Register here 

Learn safe and effective progressions to improve your power, balance and mobility. Decrease your risk of injury and fatigue while golfing.

Date: Saturday afternoons, beginning April 7. 2018

Times: 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. 

Cost: $65 for members, $97.50 for non members

 

Wedding Belles and Beaus Bootcamp - Register here 

Get ready to improve fitness, build healthy lifestyle habits, and have a fun time bonding during this fun small group training to get you ready for your big day! 

Date:Monday evenings, beginning April 9 to June 4, 2018 

Times:7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Cost:$80 for members, $120 for non-members

 

Obstacle Course Racing + Run Club - Register here 

Spend two sessions per week with a certified personal trainer getting trained and ready to tackle obstacle course racing and running this summer! Purchase this bundle to save money and to get ready for any obstacles, marathons, or any other physical challenges you have planned for summer!

YMCA Canada Personal Trainer's Course - Register here 

Earn your National YMCA Canada certifications to prescribe certifications and offer healthy living and eating advice to individuals. Class time, online resources, handouts, apprenticeship and practical evaluation are included in the course fee.

Certification Standards

Successful participants will receive a nationally recognized YMCA certification. The YMCA-YWCA of Guelph has adopted guidelines established by the National Fitness Leadership Advisory committee (NFLAC). The YMCA has been certifying fitness instructors in Canada since 1974 and the NFLAC guidelines are based, to a large extent, on the YMCA program. Fitness Leadership Trainers are YMCA-YWCA health and physical education professionals.

YMCA Canada Aquafit Instructor

This national certification course will give participants the skills to deliver safe, effective and fun aqua fit classes to all ages. Class time, online resources, handouts, apprenticeship and practical evaluation are included in the course fee.

 

YMCA Canada Group Strength Instructor 

Earn your YMCA Canada certification to teach safe and effective group strength classes. Certification includes basic anatomy, exercise design, exercise analysis, working with adults, working with music, safety and more. Utilizing various equipment as well as bodyweight training will be covered. Class time, online resources, handouts, apprenticeship and a final practical evaluation are also included in the course fee.

YMCA Canada Group Cardio Instructor 

Earn your YMCA Canada certification to teach various styles of cardio classes, such as step, hi-low aerobics, dance style classes and more. Class time, online resources, handouts, apprenticeship and practical evaluation are included in the course fee.

YMCA Canada Group Cycling Certification

Earn your national YMCA Group Cycling certification in this fun and interactive course. An online component is included as well as classroom and cycle studio time. Class time, online resources, handouts, apprenticeship and practical evaluation are included in the course fee.

Standard First Aid and CPR C

Earn your Life Saving Society First Aid and CPR C certification with one of our qualified instructors here at the Guelph Y. Classes are hands on and engaging leaving you feeling confident with your new skill set to manage an emergency situation.

The Life Saving Society policy for renewal is as follows:

  • You may complete a re certification course once after completing the full course.
  • A re certification course be completed before the expiry date of your existing certification.
  • After you have completed a re certification course once, the next time you must complete a full course.
